5th District Congressman Robert Hurt (R-Chatham) stressed the issue of unemployment in Southside, during a Henry County Chamber of Commerce sponsored legislative lunch Tuesday, at the Dutch Inn in Collinsville.
Rep. Hurt specifically mentioned the problems that StarTek's upcoming call center closing will cause, with more than 600 people losing their jobs in Henry County.
"We're working on very diligently, at least on our side in the House of Representatives to address these issues, because the people at StarTek, the employees there, they need help and they don't want a handout. They don't want an unemployment check. What they want is a job," Hurt told WSLS.
Southside has the highest unemployment rate in the Commonwealth, with the Henry County/Martinsville area being the highest city-county combination. According to the Virginia Employment Commission's most recent statistics, Martinsville had a 16.7% unemployment rate, while Henry County had a 10.2% rate as of April. Virginia's overall unemployment rate is 6.1%.
