Starting Tuesday and continuing for three weeks, contractors for the City of Lynchburg will be conducting a Sewer System Evaluation Survey (SSES) in the Burnt Bridge Road area (between Bon Ton Road and Mimosa Drive).
The survey will involve “smoke testing” of the sewer lines to locate breaks and defects within the system.
During testing, residents should note that any smoke seen coming from vent stacks on homes or from holes in the ground is odorless, non-toxic and harmless and does not create any fire hazard.
The smoke should not enter homes unless there is defective plumbing, in which case, residents should contact a licensed plumber to correct the problem. Homeowners should run water into all the drains, especially seldom-used drains, to fill the traps with water and prevent smoke from entering.
Because some sewer lines and manholes may be located on private property, contractors will need to access those easements to complete their testing and inspection.
Crew members from Brown & Caldwell and Compliance EnviroSystems will be uniformed and carrying proper identification at all times.
