Working for inclusive communities

On behalf of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, thank you to the many organizations and individuals who supported the Humanitarian Awards Dinner on May 25.

This year’s event — the most successful in its 44 year history — recognized Lorenza E. Davis Sr., William H. Gorman, Robert C. Roberts, Patricia S. Worsham and James W. Wright. These honorees reflect the highest ideals of our community: individuals who work across lines of difference to support causes locally, nationally and internationally.

We offer special appreciation to dinner chairman Bert Dodson Jr. and the members of the dinner committee for their leadership in bringing together such a cross-section of the community for this year’s event. The broad support allows VCIC to conduct educational programs that promote diversity and reduce prejudice in area middle schools, high schools, colleges, businesses and nonprofit organizations.

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities traces its roots back to 1935, when the Virginia Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews was founded on the campus of Lynchburg College. It is an honor to continue such a critical legacy — promoting understanding and respect on all issues of diversity, for all age groups, all across Virginia.

A resounding success

On June 4, the Red, White and Blue Evening of Honors banquet, a tribute to the military, veterans and their families, was held at Williams Football Stadium on the Liberty campus. Under the sponsorship of the Children’s Miracle Network and following the Children’s Miracle Network annual WSET-13 Telethon completed earlier that day, it was a terrific evening of music, memories and fellowship.

A resounding victory, the banquet netted more than $20,000 toward building the Pediatrics Center at Lynchburg General Hospital.

As the emcee for the evening, I looked out upon some of the nicest people I have ever met or known anywhere within my life’s travels. To say that folks in this area are the “cream of the crop” in Virginia is, in my view, a great understatement.

On behalf of the 14 members of our banquet leadership council, the following are especially thanked for their generosity: Abbott Laboratories, AREVA, Centra Health, Century Beverage Distributors, Dodson Brothers, Food Lion, Kohl’s, Liberty University, Lynchburg College, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1607, Pepsi, Piedmont Community Health Plan, Pinkerton Chevrolet, Retail Merchants Association, SunTrust, Valley Equipment Center, Sharlene Tenaglia and WSET-13. A special thanks also to Jack Whisler, whose tireless efforts were key to the evening’s success.
