Lynchburg Fire Marshall Greg Wormser isn't surprised to see Lynchburg firefighter Captain Ron Sanders on TV.
"It is almost like seeing a movie star," says Wormser.
Capt. Sanders and his dog Tomo, are with the Virginia Task Force One Search and Rescue team, based out of Fairfax. They are stationed in northern Japan for a few weeks, helping in the most devastated areas.
Along with everyone else, Wormser is proud one if his own is helping with rescue efforts in Japan.
"It makes it a little bit more personal when you are looking at the television or news reports," says Lynchburg Fire and EMS Chief Steven Ferguson. "He puts a lot of time on his days off to keep them in top shape. It is a great reward that he gets to go and do something positive,” says Ferguson.
Excited about the periodic updates via email, Lynchburg's Fire and EMS leaders all look forward to hearing how Capt. Sanders' and Tomo's hard work is paying off.
"The dogs are truly a partner to Captain Sanders. They are part of our team, and part of our family," says Wormser.
Capt. Sanders has been with Lynchburg Fire and EMS for 30 years. And for more than seven of those 30 years, he has been with the task force helping victims worldwide. Sanders and Tomo went to Haiti last year. He's also been to Turkey and Iran.
"He is always willing to give of himself before he takes or gives from other people,” says Wormser.
Wormser says it takes a special person to do the kind of work Capt. Sanders is doing. And if Wormser had to pick someone to do it, it would be Sanders.
It is that support from the fire department that allows Sanders to continue helping those around the world.
