Lynchburg City Council on Tuesday voted to raise the water rate by 3 percent and the sewer rate by 2 percent effective July 1.
The additional revenue generated, approximately $500,000, will be used primarily to upgrade aging utility lines and maintain com-pliance with the environmental consent order that governs the city’s combined sewer overflow program, according to the Utilities De-partment.
The new rates will be $2.29 for water and $5.65 for sewer per every 748 gallons used. For an average household, the changes will mean an extra $1.26 a month in utility costs.
No one spoke during a public hearing about the rate increases Tuesday. Council voted 6-1 to move ahead with the changes with Councilman Jeff Helgeson dissenting.
