Matt Fariss, a Campbell County farmer and partner in Lynchburg Livestock Market, said Tuesday he will seek the Republican nomination for the House of Delegates seat that is being opened up by the retirement of Del. Watkins Abbitt, I-Appomattox.
Fariss, 43, of Rustburg, said his family has farmed in Campbell County for seven generations. He said his love for the environment and knowledge of agriculture would be helpful in serving the district. He also said he would bring to the job small business experience in creating jobs and maintaining a budget.
Fariss, who has no prior political experience, becomes the second candidate for the GOP nomination.
“I have three young boys, and I want them to be able to be able to continue to live in the greatest district, in the greatest state in the greatest nation in this world,” he said.
Abbitt announced two weeks ago that he would retire after 26 years in the House. His former 59th District was changed by redistricting this year and now includes a swath of Campbell County, along with Appomattox, Buckingham, and parts of Albemarle and Nelson counties.
H. Evans Thomas V, an Appomattox County lawyer and Republican Party activist, announced last month he would seek the Republican nomination for the seat.
