The last-minute sprint in the 59th House of Delegates race between Democrat Connie Brennan and Republican Matt Fariss this weekend was a contest of robocalls versus direct-mail brochures.
It was also contest of endorsements, with former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine backing Brennan and Gov. Bob McDonnell giving his in-person support to Fariss during a campaign appearance Sunday in Lynchburg.
McDonnell's voice reached out to Campbell County voters in automated phone calls Saturday, urging them to vote for Fariss on Tuesday.
Del. Kathy Byron, R-Campbell County, recorded a separate call to voters, urging them to cast ballots for Fariss.
Brennan's late-election strategy focused on campaign mailers.
Campaign finance reports to the State Board of Elections indicated Brennan sent out at least three pieces of mail to voters in the 59th District, which also includes Appomattox County and parts of Nelson, Albemarle and Buckingham counties.
Financial contributions in the campaign's final 10 days showed $20,500 for Fariss and $28,833 for Brennan.
According to raw numbers posted by the Virginia Public Access Project, the Fariss campaign has raised almost $300,000 in the race, and Brennan's campaign has raised about half that amount.
