Where does the responsibility lie?
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta remarked to troops recently leaving Iraq, “The lives of those who were killed have not been lost in vain. They gave birth to an independent, free and sovereign Iraq.” If he believes that, he should resign.
Members of Congress who approved this unjustified war should now tell the same thing to each of the troops that were so severely injured that they might never recover to the point of being employable or able to care for themselves. Many know they will have to be cared for as if they were an infant for the rest of their lives. Most of them probably will spend hours each day trying to come up with a way to commit suicide, which is not easy if you have no hands, legs or arms. Also remember the thousands of casualties we inflicted on the innocent people of Iraq and Afghanistan; many were just babies.
This suffering, death and destruction that came with the invasion of Iraq, plus the budget deficit, was caused by voters and non-voters, George W. Bush and Congress. You cannot start wars and give tax cuts at the same time. Future military aid and wars must be paid for by a war tax. This should go into effect at the time the aid/war is approved by Congress.
Attacks against the United States and our invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan could have been avoided if past presidents and Congress had the courage to have complied 100 percent with United Nations rule. If we are not going to comply, we should then resign our membership.
Please keep the above in mind and whether you vote or not, get involved in what your country is doing.

Stand up for your store
I’m writing to encourage readers to voice their concern to Food Lion regarding the decision to close the store at 2303 Bedford Ave. in Lynchburg.
The customer service number is 1 (800) 210-9569, then press 5.
When I called this number, the customer service representative said that they are monitoring calls about this.
The person to whom I spoke stated that he has taken a number of calls on this topic. I hope if enough people take a couple of minutes to contact Food Lion, the company might reconsider.
Although I do not live in Lynchburg, I grew up in the neighborhood and rent out the house in which I grew up. There has almost always been a grocery store in the area.
