America needs to come together
Jonah Goldberg, in his Jan. 30 column in The News & Advance, said, in his opinion, President Obama’s idea, expressed in his State of the Union speech, of the country coming together like a “Seal Team 6” is “disgusting.” He seems to think that the president wants to form our nation into military assault teams with himself as the captain.
Does Goldberg not understand the use of a metaphor? Obama’s use of the Seal Team in his speech was not intended to militarize the nation. He was trying to encourage the nation to quit laying blame and instead begin to work together to solve the very large problems we have. He wants to encourage us to a shared sacrifice that includes hard work and less partisan bickering. He wants Americans to move away from a self-centered thinking and begin to work as a team. This is just common sense.
During World War II, our country came together and formed a bond that was really quite incredible. We sent men to war and women to the factories, and we tightened our belts to create a community that worked to end the German and Japanese plans of world domination. Individuals bought war bonds and stamps. My grandmother worked on an assembly line in an aircraft plant in Chicago.
We can do this again. Because of advanced technologies, this country has the most productive workers on the planet and we can recover and become a force once again in the world. Education is important to getting there. Our tax structure needs to be changed so that the rich share more in paying down the deficit and lessening the burden on the middle class. I understand the Republican interest in gaining the White House and congressional control, but they had their chance from 2000 to 2008 and you see where that got us.
