UPDATED 1:04 P.M.

The Amherst County High School community today is mourning the death of a senior killed in a car accident Sunday.

Brittni Coffey, 17, died in the wreck. Authorities said her Volkswagen Beetle ran off the side of Virginia 130 on Sunday afternoon, overcorrected and struck a Kia SUV.

Coffey sang with the Amherechos show choir, having last performed on Friday for the Amherst County Public Schools Education Foundation.

"We're feeling lots of emotions today," said Haywood Hand Jr., the principal of Amherst County High School. "It was just one of those mornings when we gave the kids the opportunity to express themselves.

"Some just cried and hugged. Some talked. Others confided with adults in the room," he said.

On Sunday night, school officials launched a counseling plan. "Other principals volunteered their guidance folks," Hand said.

Three occupants of the SUV in Sunday's wreck suffered minor injuries. Authorities are investigating.

EARLIER:

A 17-year-old Madison Heights girl was killed in a two-car accident Sunday afternoon near the Monroe area of Amherst County.

Trooper P.A. Eckenrode said the accident happened at about 4:55 p.m. on Elon Road, east of Rt. 795. The girl was brought to the hospital and where she died at about 5:55 p.m.

Eckenrode said the teen’s family has been notified, but her identity is not being released to the public.

He said the teen’s Volkswagen Beetle ran off the right side of the road, she overcorrected the car, crossing the centerline where she was struck by a KIA SUV.

The three occupants of the SUV suffered minor injuries. None of the identities of the 46-yearold driver, her husband or daughter are being released, Eckenrode said. All of them are from the Madison Heights area.

Eckenrode said speed was not a factor in the accident, but authorities have not determined what caused the teenager to drive off the road.

Elon Road, Va. 130, was closed for approximately an hour.
