County officials identified about 11 parcels of land that could be used for a shooting range in Campbell County.
Speaking in a Public Works, Community & Economic Development Committee meeting Tuesday, Deputy County Administrator Clif Tweedy told committee members that potential sites have been identified across the county and he expects to narrow those options down to at least three before having a consulting firm weigh in.
The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office wants to build an outdoor shooting range and training facility in the county to make it easier for deputies to get their firearms certification and other training, as well as ease budget woes.
Currently, the department spends close the $10,000 a year to rent firing ranges to train its 65 deputies.
A proposal to build a shooting range near the landfill off Calohan Road was scuttled in January due to citizen feedback.
One piece of land under consideration is located behind Lynchburg Regional Airport, near the shooting range currently operated by the Lynchburg Police Department.
Another potential site is next to the current Liberty University shooting range.
Officials would not identify the other potential sites or provide specific details, but said they plan to allow other jurisdictions to use the site.
“We’ve got a focus on a regional bend,” said County Administrator David Laurrell.
The facility may not operate under a traditional regional model but would allow others to use the site to offset costs, he said.
There is no cost estimate available on the project, in large part because the final location will determine cost.
The issue likely will resurface in September, when the county expects to apply for a Special Use Permit.
“We’re gonna make this a very deliberate process,” said Tweedy “so that everyone is comfortable with it.”
