UPDATED 4:10 p.m.:

The afternoon's testimony in the George Huguely murder trial included a number of witnesses who were friends and teammates of Huguely.

Perhaps the most explosive witness was Mike Burns, who was a UNC lacrosse player and occaisionally "hooked up" with Huguely's on-again, off-again girlfriend Yeardley Love, the victim in the case.

Burns described meeting Love at the Preakness horse race one summer. They also lived near one another the next summer while working in New York, and hooked up sometimes their senior year.

Defense attorney Francis McQ. Lawrence defined hooking up as intimate contact up to but not necessarily including sexual intercourse.

Burns recounted once opening a door in Huguely's apartment to find Huguely choking Love.

He said Huguely was on his back on the bed with his arm around Love's throat. Love was on her back atop Huguely, he said.

The defense drew attention to some inconsitencies from prior descriptions Burns had given of the choking incident.

"All I know for sure is that he had his arm around her neck," he said during the prosecution's redirect.

More than one witness described an argument between Huguely and Love when she discovered him with a teammate and two high school seniors in his apartment.

Huguely was babysitting the high schoolers so UVa student Kate Kamber could go finish up an argument, Kamber testified.

She recounted Love scolding Huguely when she entered the apartment.
"Are these your new girlfriends, are these the girls you have been texting," she recalled Love asking Huguely.

Several witnesses also described Huguely as quite drunk the day before Love died.

He had attended a lacrosse team father-son golf tournament and was slurring and interrupting others by the end of the tournament after drinking all day.

Teammate Brian Carroll described Huguely's drinking problem as worsening in the last year of Love's life. By the start of May, he testified, Huguely was drinking roughly four times each week, getting drunk every time.

UPDATED 11:46 a.m.:

This morning's testimony in the Huguely case focused in large part on the first responders who went to the scene of victim Yeardley Love's death.

Perhaps the most dramatic moment came when Commonwealth's Attorney Dave Chapman introduced photographs of rescue workers attempting to revive Love.

They tried for 24 or 25 minutes, but Love never showed any signs of life, so the workers asked for and got permission to give up, an EMT testified.

The police officer who first performed CPR on Love also testified.

Charlottesville police officer K.W. Blackwell recalled responding to what was reported as a possible alcohol overdose.

"When I saw [Love's injuries, I knew] it was nowhere near the report that was given and realized something totally different had happened," he said.
CPR was a major point for testimony.

The defense argued Wednesday in its opening statement that the CPR may have caused the damage to Love's lower brain found during an autopsy.

There was also a great deal of testimony about the location of various objects in the room that seemed to be setting up some point or points to be made later.

The prosecution will present its first full day of witnesses in the George Huguely murder trial today.

Wednesday saw the seating of the jury and opening arguments from both sides in the morning. The prosecution argued Yeardley Love’s death was murder. The defense argued that her death was manslaughter, caused accidentally.

Several key witnesses also testified Wednesday, including the roommate who found Love’s lifeless body.

Today’s testimony is expected to include the rescue workers who responded to the scene.
