Virginia Tech president, former V.P. dropped from April 16th lawsuit

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Virginia Tech officials confirm to WSLS that university President Charles Steger, and former executive vice-president Jim Hyatt have been dropped as defendants from the wrongful death lawsuits filed by two families of April 16th victims.

Charles Steger and Jim Hyatt had argued back in 2010 that they were protected by sovereign immunity, because their jobs were paid for by the state.  Back then, a judge did not agree with that argument, but a new judge is hearing the case currently.

The families of Julia Pryde and Erin Peterson are suing the school for $10 million, and accuse administrators of negligence for failing to immediately warn students that a gunman was loose on campus, prior to the Norris Hall shootings.

The lawsuits are expected to be tried in March.
