Amherst firefighters extinguish house fire

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Firefighters stopped a blaze this morning that started in a chimney and began to spread to the attic, authorities said.

The 11:30 a.m. fire occurred at 1585 Sugar Hill Tunnel Road, off of Buffalo Springs Turnpike in the Pleasant View area of Amherst County.

Amherst, Monelison and Pedlar firefighters, plus a Department of Public Safety ambulance from Pedlar responded, along with a Virginia Department of Forestry unit.

Firefighters controlled the blaze shortly before noon, said Danny Tucker, chief of the Pedlar Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

"I’m just glad no one was hurt,” said the resident, Mark Everett. He and his hound-Labrador mix, Sweet Pea, escaped unharmed.

The fire originated from the chimney, said Gary Roakes, Amherst County’s director of public safety.
