Appomattox native W.T. Thompson’s run on “American Idol” ended Wednesday night when he was sent home during the show’s grueling Hollywood round.
Judges cut the initial group of 309 contestants down to less than half over three episodes.
It culminated with the always-dramatic group round, in which four or five singers are required to team up, pick a song, design choreography and hit the stage for a performance the following morning.
“It’s the most infamous night of Hollywood Week,” host Ryan Seacrest said last week, “the ultimate test of strength, endurance and determination.”
Thompson showed up for the first time about halfway through Wednesday night’s two-hour show.
All of his performances ended up on the cutting room floor, but cameras did follow him as he left the theater and called his then-pregnant wife, Laura, to tell her he was coming home.
Thompson’s “Idol” journey began over the summer, when he auditioned before judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson in Savannah, Ga.
