A known area cocaine dealer was sentenced on multiple firearms charges in Lynchburg Circuit Court Friday.
Darryl Lee Graves, 36, was convicted in October of attempted malicious wounding, maliciously discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to court records, Graves shot at his wife in their Lynchburg home.
Judge Mosby Perrow sentenced Graves to a total of five years with four suspended on the attempted wounding charge, five years with four suspended on the shooting charge, and the mandatory minimum of two years on the possession charge.
Court records in Campbell County show Graves was convicted of cocaine distribution in 1996, 2002 and in December on two separate counts.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison for the latest charges.
Each of the 1996 and 2002 convictions were followed by jail terms for violating the terms of his probation.
Graves’s attorney, Jessie Dumond, told Perrow Friday Graves grew up in a home with domestic violence and substance abuse, and his cocaine addiction is now a five-days-a-week habit.
Dumond said Graves sells cocaine to support his habit and is clearly suffering the consequences of his addiction. She asked Perrow to sentence him concurrently with the Campbell County drug sentence he is now serving.
“He’s going to have time to get clean,” she said. “He’s going to have time to get away from the people and the circumstances that are contributing to the situation.”
The request was not granted.
In a letter to the court, Graves’ wife wrote she was willing to work on their marriage and requested he not be barred from having contact with her.
“I want to apologize to my wife and get this behind us,” Graves said before being sentenced.
