BEDFORD — Liberty High’s softball team put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth against Brookville, scoring the winning run without hitting the ball out of the infield, Friday night at home.
The Minettes improved to 6-0, 3-0 in Seminole District play, with their 3-2 win over the Bees.
Liberty pitcher Brooke Davis reached on an error by Brookville’s shortstop to start the rally.
Savannah Graham put more pressure on the Bees’ defense by bunting down the first base line.
Brookville’s catcher fielded the bunt cleanly but its second baseman, who was covering first, had the ball momentarily pop out of her glove with Graham bearing down on her.
Brandy Lacy, pinch running for Davis, alertly took third on the play to set up the winning run.
Hannah Martin brought her home with her third hit of the night, a perfect bunt past the pitcher to the shortstop, who didn’t have time to throw out the speedy Martin as Lacy scored.
“(Martin) is just super fast and is able to lay bunts down,” Minettes coach Sherry Story said. “Brookville is a good team and I think everybody is going to play us really tough.”
All three of Liberty’s runs were unearned as Brookville (2-3, 1-1) committed three errors, with two passed balls and a wild pitch.
Brookville’s Nicole DeFilippo (2-3) was the tough luck loser. She went six innings, allowed six hits, two walks, hit a batter and struck out six.
“Basically two mistakes (in the sixth) cost us,” Bees coach Larry Kidd said. “That overthrow and when the ball popped out of her glove.
“But, everybody is in the same boat. None of us have had much practice lately (because of spring break and the weather). I’m proud of our effort. We battled.”
Davis (4-0) allowed one earned run, five hits, two walks and struck out 11 batters.
“(For Davis,) it wasn’t her best but she pitched a great game,” Story said. “She struck out 11. That’s pretty good.”
Brookville scored both of its runs in the top of the first.
Kristina Finamore led off with a single, stole second and scored when the Minettes’ second baseman had her throw get away from the first baseman while trying to throw out Hope Johnson.
Johnson took second on the errant throw and third on a passed ball. She scored on Summer Jones’ single to right.
But that was all the scoring Davis allowed.
She allowed just four base runners and struck out nine over the final six innings.
Liberty (6-0, 3-0) scored its first run in the fourth.
Mattie Witt drew a walk, went to second on a fielder’s choice, advanced to third on Davis’ single and scored when the third baseman’s late throw to first skipped away.
The Minettes added another run in the fifth when Martin led off with a single, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on Page Murphy’s sacrifice fly.
