Barry Booker, a graduate of Amherst County High School, signed a rookie free agent contract with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans on Monday.
The former Virginia Tech defensive tackle was one of five undrafted Hokies to agree to deals. Linebacker Vince Hall signed with the Rams Sunday night. Safety D.J. Parker (49ers), defensive tackle Kory Robertson (Dolphins) and wide receiver Josh Hyman (Rams) all agreed to contracts Monday.
The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Booker is the third Amherst County graduate to enter the NFL ranks in the last six years, joining fellow Hokies defensive tackles David Pugh and Tim Sandidge. Pugh was drafted by the Colts in 2002, and Sandidge signed a rookie free agent contract with the Rams in 2006.
Terms of Booker’s contract were not available. He could not be reached for comment.
The Titans could be a good fit for Booker. They’re in need of depth at defensive tackle with the departure of free agent Randy Starks this offseason. Tennessee hasn’t signed any veteran free agent tackles this offseason; it didn’t draft any, and Booker was the only tackle in the Titans rookie free agent haul.
Booker was a second-team all-ACC selection last season. He started his last two years in Blacksburg and finished his career with 113 tackles and 19.5 tackles for loss.
Liberty
Liberty linebacker Vince Redd and offensive tackle Stephen Sene signed free-agent contracts with NFL teams Sunday following the conclusion of the NFL Draft.
Redd, a 6-foot-6 outside linebacker, signed with the Cleveland Browns. Sene, a 6-foot-8 left tackle, signed with the St. Louis Rams.
Liberty, which hasn’t had a player selected in the NFL Draft since Eric Green went in the first round in 1990, has had 23 players ink contracts with NFL clubs.
Last year, 2005 graduate Lauren Williams signed with the Oakland Raiders. Former Flames running back Samkon Gado has seen time with the Green Pay Packers, Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins.
