JF, Liberty win big at home

Liberty finished with 431 yards of total offense to open its season with a 33-0 non-district win against Western Albemarle.

Five different players scored for Liberty (1-0). Carlton “Boo” Payne started the scoring on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Bowyer.

Lavarta Tanner and Thomas Clark added touchdown runs and Anthony Reynolds returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown to give the Minutemen a 26-0 halftime lead.

Clark finished with 112 rushing yards, Tanner with 110 and J.J. Starks with 90.

Staunton River 17

FOREST — Desmond Goode ran for 197 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers to a season-opening win against their Bedford County rival, the Golden Eagles.

The Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 Seminole) racked up 333 of their 381 yards on the ground. Goode scored on runs of 14, 7, 70, and 3 yards.

Rashad Hall finished with 73 rushing yards on 10 carries for JF. Tyler Rosser and Jeff Brown both scored touchdowns.

Meech Coles led Staunton River (0-1, 0-1) with 68 rushing yards. He scored on a 41-yard run in the fourth quarter.
