Pirates promote Lincoln, their top pick in 2006, to the Hillcats

Brad Lincoln, the Pirates’ first-round pick in 2006 at No. 4 overall, has been promoted to Lynchburg and is scheduled to start for the Hillcats on Friday in Potomac.

Lincoln, who had Tommy John surgery 15 months ago after a standout career at the University of Houston, went 5-5 with a 4.65 ERA in 11 starts at Low-A Hickory this season.

The right-hander struck out 46 batters and walked just six in 62 innings.

After three straight rough outings, the 23-year-old threw 6 2/3 shutout innings in Hickory’s 4-1 win at Hagerstown on Saturday. He struck out seven, giving up four hits and walking two.

To make room in the rotation, left-hander Brian Holliday will move to the bullpen.

Reliever Adam Simon was sent to Hickory to clear a roster spot.

If the five-man rotation holds, Lincoln will make his City Stadium debut on July 23 against Wilmington.
