Virginia Tech has received its eighth and biggest football commitment for the Class of 2009: multi-purpose player David Wilson, who has picked the Hokies over Auburn, Clemson and Michigan, among several others.
Wilson, a 5-11, 192-pounder from George Washington High School in Danville, is rated the No. 4 multi-purpose player in the country by recruiting Web site Rivals.com.
Wilson, whom Tech recruited as a running back, ran for 1,550 yards last season and gained 11.4 yards per carry, according to Rivals.
G.R. Wiley, Director of the Virginia Amateur Baseball League who played an integral role in bringing next week’s National Amateur Baseball Federation 17-under World Series to Lynchburg, was discharged Friday afternoon from the Cookeville, Tenn., hospital he was staying since suffering a minor stroke on Wednesday night.
According to an update posted on the www.vanabf.com Web site, he is feeling much better and looking forward to returning home to help make final preparations for the World Series. The event starts on Thursday at 10 area ball parks after Wednesday’s Opening Ceremonies at City Stadium, also the site of Sunday’s championship game at 2 p.m.

Veloso, Carter competing in Pa.
Sammie Veloso, a 14-year-old figure skater from Bedford, qualified second out of 19 competitors in Friday’s Novice Ladies Long program and will compete in today’s final at 5 p.m. at the seventh annual Liberty Open Summer competition in Philadelphia.
On Wednesday, Veloso qualified first out of 18 girls in Novice Short Program. She went on to place third out of 20 finalists Thursday with her career high point total for a novice short program after landing a clean triple salchow.
The Liberty Open is the largest competition on Veloso’s skating schedule in terms of numbers of competitors with girls coming from all over the nation as well as Mexico and internationally.
In late June, Veloso placed first out of 18 skaters in both the Ladies Novice short and long programs at the Chesapeake Open in Laurel, Md.
Maya Carter, 11, of Lynchburg, who is also competing in this week’s Liberty Open, placed first in her age division at the Chesapeake Open after landing all of her double axels cleanly.

Colby Francis, who won four of the five events in this summer’s Central Virginia Junior Golf Tour, shot a 79-78-157 to hold off Harrison Scharf (82-76-158) and take the 13-14-year-old title in Thursday’s CVJG Tournament at Colonial Hills.
Jacob Aultice, who’s 7, captured the 11-under title by shooting 47-54-101 over eight holes each day.
