Liberty’s football program has picked up two recent verbal commitments from rising high-school seniors.
Demetrius Ward, who played tight end and defensive end last season at Phoebus High in Hampton, has given his commitment, according to the Newport News Daily Press.
Ward, who is 6-foot-3, 210 pounds attended Liberty’s camp this week and played linebacker. He is expected to sign a letter of intent in November.
Last week, SirChauncey Holloway, a 5-8, 190-pound running back from Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla., gave a commitment to LU, according to the Tampa Tribune.
Holloway has been suspended for his senior year for violating a FHSAA by-law. According to the Tribune, he falsified his address after transferring from Plant City to Armwood. Liberty was well aware of the suspension.
“Everyone was very positive about it,” Armwood coach Sean Callahan told the Tribune. “Liberty really wanted him, and he felt good about it.”
Golf
Liberty golfer Nathan Schenz-Davis has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, which will be held July 14-19 in Aurora, Colo.
Schenz-Davis shot a 142 at the Sycuan Resort Glen Oaks in El Cajon, Calif., to earn his way into the field.
Baseball
Virginia shortstop Greg Miclat, the ACC leader in stolen bases, pitcher Matt Packer and closer Michael Schwimer each made the first team on the Virginia Sports Information Directors University Division All-State baseball team.
Liberty pitcher David Stokes was named to the second team as were Virginia Tech shortstop Matt Hacker and Virginia pitcher Pat McAnaney.
VMI third baseman Tanner Biagini also made the first team while VMI pitcher Chris Duty was named to the second team.
Schwimer was named the state’s pitcher of the year after saving 14 games, tying the school’s record, and being selected in the 14th round of the Major League Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Miclat, who was picked in the fifth round of the draft by the Baltimore Orioles, made the VaSID All-State first team as a designated hitter last year.
Track & field
Just 10 days after earning his first All-American honor in the discus, Liberty University senior Clendon Henderson received Academic All-American status as well. He became the first LU men’s track and field or cross country runner to be so honored at the Division I level, as a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American selection.
