William Campbell still too tough for Altavista

ALTAVISTA — For all of the improvements made by the Altavista’s football program under head coach Mike Scharnus, the Colonels were shown that they have a little more work to do when it comes to slugging it out with one of the Dogwood’s heavyweights.

William Campbell continued its dominance of its Dogwood rival Friday night, beating Altavista 28-3.

“I’m proud of our guys’ effort,” Scharnus said. “Our guys did everything we asked them to do and they fought hard. (William Campbell) is just a better football team right now. We folded up as soon as we stepped on the field with them last year. But, we are a different football team than last year. We build off this with the effort we gave tonight. We just have to go after it next week with the same intensity.”

The Generals (6-1, 3-0 Dogwood) controlled the game from the start as Timmy Wright returned the opening kickoff 41 yards to the Colonels’ 34. From there William Campbell needed just four plays to score on Stanley Peerman’s 1-yard run 1:42 into the game.

William Campbell scored again just before the end of the first quarter when Baron Adams completed a 23-yard pass to Brandon Adams on fourth and 11 to push the lead to 14-0 with 39 seconds left in the first.

“It was good win, but I thought we scored really quick there and just didn’t keep up that intensity,” Generals coach Brad Bradley said. “All in all, I’m pretty pleased.”

Altavista took the second-half kickoff and picked up one first down before being forced to punt. William Campbell took over on its own 37 and took 11 plays to stretch its lead 21-0 on another 1-yard run by Peerman.

The Generals then forced a three-and-out from Altavista and took just six plays to go 46 yards and take a 28-0 lead on Baron Adams two-yard run with 10:18 left to play.

William Campbell’s potent offense is usually the story, but it was the Generals’ defense that stole the show against the Colonels.

William Campbell limited Altavista three points, eight first downs and just 81 yards of offense. Those numbers were considerably better until the Colonels’ final drive of the night when Altavista drove 65 yards, picked up three first downs and broke up the shutout with a Blake Todd 20-yard field goal with 3.4 seconds left.

“The defense just played lights out,” Bradley said. “Coach Meadows did a great job on defense and they have been playing at a high level all year. I don’t think they’ve been getting enough credit.”

The Generals will host Gretna next week in a game that will likely decide the Dogwood District title.

“We’ve done what we’ve got to do,” Bradley said. “We are going to come in 6-1 and they are going to come in 6-0. It’s time to play football. It’s Gretna week and that’s fun.”
