Vinny Giles highlights Awareness Garden Golf Classic

The Awareness Garden Foundation will be holding its 2008 Golf Classic on Monday, Oct. 6, at Boonsboro Country Club.

The Awareness Garden, located at the Ed Page entrance to the James River Heritage Trail, was dedicated on Sept. 6, 2003, for the purpose of honoring the families, friends and caregivers, whose lives have been touched by cancer.

“The garden is all about celebrating those who have survived cancer,” said Co-Chairman of the Golf Classic Charles Nowlin. “We have a bell and folks are encouraged to go to the garden and ring the bell.”

The Golf Classic raises money for a scholarship fund for children of families who have been impacted by cancer, and this year’s event features Lynchburg native Vinny Giles.

Giles, who now resides in Richmond, was the 1972 U.S. Amateur Champion. He was the runner-up in 1967, ’68 and ’69.

He also won the British Amateur Championship in 1973 and was a three-time All-American at the University of Georgia.

“The purpose is to raise money (for a good cause),” Giles said. “I’m happy to do what I can. I don’t get back to Lynchburg as much as I used to, but I always look forward to coming back.”

Said Nowlin: “We were very fortunate to get Vinny Giles. Vinny, of course, is a Lynchburg native and an amateur golfer. He is for real.”

The event is a four-person captain’s choice format with 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. shotgun starts. There is room for 26 teams in each start. The cost $550 for a foursome and the deadline to enter is Friday. Prizes have been donated by several local businesses. There is also a closest-to-the-pin contest and a hole-in-one contest sponsored by Bergland Toyota.

In addition, there’s a cocktail party on Oct. 5 at Boonsboro County Club where prizes will be given away.

“I want to encourage all the sponsors and participants to attend the festivities on Sunday night,” Nowlin said. “There will be plenty of food and drinks.”

The biggest prize awarded at Sunday’s cocktail party will be Giles.

“One representative from each team will participate in a closest-to-the-pin contest to determine which team will have Vinny playing with them,” Nowlin said. “The team with Vinny will just hold one golfer out on each hole.”

There are still opportunities to be a hole sponsor. The cost to sponsor a hole is $1,000.

“This is a fund-raising event,” Nowlin said. “The last two years we’ve made $150,000. We would also like to thank Boonsboro. They are private club and only allow two events like this a year and the board was gracious enough to allow us to use their club.”
