MONETA — The Bedford County showdown between Liberty and Staunton River had razzle-dazzle and then drizzle-fizzle as the Minutemen crushed the Golden Eagles, 40-14.
Staunton River broke the ice first with a gutsy fourth-and-6 call from their 19-yard line when Cody Jones hooked up with Geary Cunningham for a TD. The ball bounced around before finally settling in Cunningham’s grasp.
On the ensuing kickoff, Liberty’s J.J. Starks had a huge return to the red zone. Teammate Anthony Reynolds scored on a 12-yard run and Logan Johnson nailed the extra point to knot the contest at 7-7.
At 7:40 in the second quarter, Liberty’s Thomas Clark dashed 69 yards for another Minutemen touchdown. But the PAT kick was blocked.
Then it was Staunton River’s turn for a big kickoff return. Golden Eagle Wesley Gates swept by Liberty’s squad to the Minutemen’s 25-yard line. A minute later, Al Dillon jumped over Liberty’s Barry Heck and Willie Waters for the tie and Stephen Hardy’s kick put the Golden Eagles ahead 14-13.
“Staunton River kept coming and we kept coming back with them,” Liberty coach Chris Watts said.
That was as close as it would get. Liberty showed its muscle in the second half, outscoring the Golden Eagles 20-0.
“No excuses, they beat us,” Staunton River coach Rick Witt said.
Liberty improves to 4-1 while Staunton River falls to 0-5.
Staunton River’s Meech Coles had 17 carries for 96 yards and Liberty’s Thomas Clark had four carries for 83 yards and a TD.
