Lynchburg bounced back from a 6-3 loss in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Sunday night with a 6-0 victory in the nightcap against Winston-Salem. Jordy Mercer homered and drove in four runs in the double dip. Tonight, a four-game series with Wilmington kicks off starting at 7:05 p.m. at City Stadium.
The Hillcats struck first in Game 1 of the doubleheader, with a pair of runs in the first inning. Jordy Mercer and Matt Hague both singled in a run to give make it a 2-0 game.
In the fourth inning, Winston-Salem tied up the contest with a pair of runs. A two-run single by Tyler Kuhn knotted up the game at 2-2.
In the next frame, the Dash took the lead for good with a four-run frame. Dale Mollenhauer singled in the go-ahead run and Seth Loman followed with a three-run homer to give Winston-Salem a 6-2 advantage.
A wild pitch brought in a run for Lynchburg in the seventh inning, but that would be the final run in the Cats 6-3 in Game 1 of the doubleheader.
The win went to Dylan Axelrod (2-1) for Winston-Salem (28-26) and the loss went to Harrison Bishop (2-4) for Lynchburg (23-32). The save went to Tyson Corley (4).
In Game 2, Lynchburg scored a pair in the opening frame again. Mercer brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Kris Watts singled in a run to give the Hillcats a two-run lead.
In the third inning, Mercer drove in two more with his eighth homer of the season to make it 4-0. Single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for Lynchburg would finish the scoring.
Starter Matt McSwain (10-8) tossed the first complete game of the season for the Hillcats (24-32), and the loss went to Levi Maxwell (4-14) for Winston-Salem (28-27).
After splitting the four-game series with the Dash, Lynchburg now takes on the Wilmington in a four-game series. Right-hander Bryan Morris will get the nod for Lynchburg opposite fellow righty Eduardo Paulino in the series opener.
