Jessie Quarles netted 13 points, Renae Brooks collected 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots and Mandy Dix scored 11 points and distributed six assists to lead host Jefferson Forest to a 43-29 win over Heritage in a Seminole District tournament opener Monday night.
“In the second quarter, we were able to attack their pressure and got a couple transition layups,” Forest coach Paul Redgate said. “We played a matchup 2-3 zone and did a good job of helping against Heritage, which is very good at penetrating to the basket.”
JF (11-10), which set up a semifinal showdown at Staunton River in the first semifinal game at 6 p.m. on Wednesay, also sealed the second seed for the Region III, Division 4 playoffs. The Cavaliers will play William Byrd in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Rustburg 53, Liberty 41
Shannon Glass had a few of her six steals in the second quarter when the Red Devils outscored the Minettes 22-10 to take control. Rustburg applied its pressure defense to force turnovers and Michelle Heath and Gabby Glass capitalized with five points apiece in the period.
“They’re a very scrappy team and they come ready to play,” Liberty assistant coach Brynn Koenig said of Liberty. “It wasn’t our best game, but defensively, we played in a three match-up zone and Shannon Glass and Michelle Heath and Sammie Bogolin pressure well up front. Then, you’ve got Gabby Glass down low.”
Gabby Glass finished with eight blocked shots, many after offensive rebounds by Liberty’s LaChelle Starks (13 rebounds).
Brookville 69, Amherst 21
Brookville, which already has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Region III, Division 3, playoffs, rolled to a lopsided victory over seventh-seeded and winless Amherst.
“We did a real nice job on transition,” Brookville coach Warner Dyke said. “We’re starting to play pretty well. The question is, ‘Can we continue to get better?’”
The Bees, who travel to Staunton River to play Rustburg on in Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. district semifinal, will receive a first-round bye in Region III and play the winner between the No. 1 seed out of the Blue Ridge District and the No. 2 seed out of the Southern Valley at Stuart’s Draft on Friday.
