Sixth-seeded William Campbell’s girls basketball team outscored third-seeded host Appomattox in every quarter to stage a 33-27 upset victory in the quarterfinal round of the Dogwood District tournament on Tuesday night.
The Generals advance to Thursday’s semifinal at second-seeded Dan River and remain in contention for an eighth seed in the Region B, Division 1 playoffs.
“We probably put forth our best team effort since early in the season,” Generals coach Brad Harper said.
Amber Marstin scored a game-high 12 points and Nicole Jackson added nine for William Campbell (6-16).
“Marstin returned to her form of old,” Harper said. “That’s the kind of effort we need out of her every night, and Jackson hit some big outside shots, distributed the ball well, got us in our offense and did a great job.”
The Generals held Appomattox (9-14) to just over 15 percent shooting to bounce back from a 12-point loss against the Raiders on Friday.
“We shot the basketball 63 times and when you make only 10 out of 63, you’re not going to win many basketball games,” said Appomattox coach D.J. Jack, who formerly coached the Generals. “Marstin and Jackson stepped up and played a whole lot better than they did Friday night. They wanted it. These kids were more fired up than we were. I think they could give Dan River a run for their money.”
The Raiders, who are seeded seventh in the Region B, Division 2 playoffs, were led by Kasey Burks (eight points) and Lateesha Christian (seven).
Dan River 80, Nelson County 51
The Wildcats put four players in double figures in one of the highest scoring outputs by a Dogwood District team this season, routing the Governors in a quarterfinal contest in Danville.
Mhy’keah Baez netted a game-high 23 points complemented by Dijonna Morris’ 18, Jasmine Walker’s 14 and Chaquite Chappell’s 10 as Dan River (13-9) dominated Nelson (4-16).
Brittany Crawford scored 17 points, sinking both of the game’s 3-pointers, for the Governors.
Chatham 44, Gretna 38
Erin Ricketts paced the fourth-seeded Cavaliers with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, in a competitive quarterfinal clash with the fifth-seeded Hawks.
Amber Fitzgerald scored a game-high 17 points for Gretna (8-13). Despite shooting just 6 for 24 from the foul line, Chatham, also 8-13, advances to Thursday’s semifinal against top-seeded Altavista (13-7, 12-0).
