HARRISONBURG — Altavista's boys basketball team cruised past a fatigued Riverheads squad 41-29 on Saturday in the Region B, Division 1, championship game at Eastern Mennonite University.
The Colonels dominated the boards at both ends of the court and their defense continually collapsed in on the Gladiators’ big man, Lyndon Humphries.
“We were just trying to take the post away,” Altavista coach Mike Cartolaro said.
With Riverheads’ inside game on the fritz, the Gladiators turned to their perimeter shooters.
“We missed a lot of 3 pointers that had been going in for us all year,” Riverheads coach John Corbett said.
Altavista held the Gladiators to just four points in the second quarter and went into the half leading 18-12.
“They (the Colonels) were substituting three at a time,” Corbett said. “They can really come at you in bunches.”
The Colonels stretched their lead to 29-22 after the third.
“We just dug ourselves a hole and Altavista continued to execute,” Corbett said.

“We forced them into turnovers and quick shots,” Buffalo Gap coach Chad Coffey said.
The Bison (21-3) increased their lead to 31-12 by halftime and the outmanned Colonels had no answer.
Shenandoah District player of the year Sara Lamneck added 14.
Miller School 49, LCA 45
Liberty Christian Academy’s Macedonian duo of Hanka Musa and Jelena Antic combined for 34 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to top Miller School in the championship game of the Blue Ridge Conference tournament played at Virginia Episcopal School.
