The Hillcats became the first Carolina League team to reach 20 victories Tuesday, using a four-run fifth inning as a springboard to a 6-2 win at Winston-Salem.
Thanks to Potomac’s loss to Salem Tuesday, Lynchburg (20-11) again has the Carolina League’s best record.
Winston-Salem led 1-0, but catcher Kris Watts got Lynchburg started in the fifth, hitting an infield single to second and moving to second on Dale Mollenhauer’s throwing error. Watts moved to third on Jared Keel’s groundout.
After Kent Sakamoto walked, Ray Chang singled to left, scoring Watts and moving Sakamoto to second. Alex Presley’s single drove in Sakamoto and moved Chang to third. Chang scored on Jordy Mercer’s sacrifice fly, and Presley scored on Pedro Alvarez’s two-out single to left, pushing the lead to 4-1.
The Hillcats got the best of Dash starter Johnnie Lowe, who beat the Hillcats last month in Lynchburg in his first high-A start.
Lowe allowed five hits and walked four in seven innings. Lynchburg’s Matt McSwain allowed four hits and two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings and picked up the win to improve to 2-1.
Michael Dubee, who began the season on the Winston-Salem roster, pitched two scoreless innings to close out the win.
