Pedro Alvarez hit a game-tying, solo home run in the ninth inning and the Hillcats broke the game open with five runs in the top of the 11th as Lynchburg beat Frederick 13-9 Monday night at Harry Grove Stadium.
In the 11th, Pedro Florimon’s one-out throwing error allowed Jordy Mercer to reach first and opened the floodgates for the Hillcats.
Mercer stole second, and Frederick pitcher Chris Salberg intentionally walked Alvarez. Matt Hague came through in a big spot, hitting a double that scored Mercer and gave Lynchburg (24-13) a 9-8 lead.
Kris Watts hit a sacrifice fly to score Alvarez, and Jared Keel ripped a three-run home run to left to push the lead to five.
All of the runs in the inning were unearned.
Hillcats pitcher Chris Colla (3-0) got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the 10th by striking out Tyler Henson and forcing Brandon Waring to fly out to right.
Lynchburg led 2-0 early but Frederick chased Hillcats starter Justin Wilson with four runs in the third. The Keys pushed the lead to 7-4 after five before the Hillcats began to chip away, scoring one run each in innings six through nine.
Hillcats designated hitter Ray Chang went 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
