Ronald Uviedo pitched five strong innings, and the Hillcats broke a tie with a run in the top of the sixth in a 2-1 win at Frederick Tuesday night.
The Hillcats (25-13) are now two victories away from matching their first-half win total from a year ago. The first half of the Carolina League season doesn’t end until June 22.
Uviedo gave up a run in the first but settled down nicely after that. He limited Frederick to three hits and a run, walked one and struck out seven to earn his second victory of the year.
The Cats got another strong bullpen outing out of Chris Cullen, who pitched two scoreless innings. Michael Dubee al-lowed a hit in two innings and struck out three to earn his third save.
Frederick took the lead in the first on Tyler Henson’s RBI groundout. With a runner still at third, Uviedo struck out Brandon Waring and forced Billy Rowell to ground out to first to end the threat.
Lynchburg quickly tied the game. Matt Hague led off the second with a double and scored on Kris Watts’ RBI single.
The Hillcats took the lead in the sixth on Jordy Mercer’s RBI double, which scored Maiko Loyola, who had reached on a leadoff walk.
Frederick threatened in the bottom of the eighth, as Rodolfo Cardona reached third on a one-out triple. But Dubee got Matt Angle to ground out to first and David Cash to line out to short to end the threat.
Dubee struck out the side in the ninth.
The teams continue the series tonight at 7. Lynchburg sends LHP Chi-Hung Cheng (3-1, 4.41) to the mound. LHP Brian Matusz (2-2, 2.95) starts for the Keys.
