The Lynchburg Hillcats extended their lead over the Potomac Nationals to one and a half games in the Carolina League’s Northern Division with a 13-5 victory in Friday night’s series opener at Potomac.
Lynchburg got its offense going right off the bat in as Jose De Los Santos opened the game with his third triple of the season and scored on a double by Jordy Mercer, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
One out later, Matt Hague doubled to center and scored on a single by Miles Durham for an early 2-0 lead.
De Los Santos singled, stole second and scored on a single by Mercer in the second and the Hillcats added three more runs in the third, when designated hitter Pedro Alvarez opened with his ninth home run of the season, to seize a 6-1 lead.
Lynchburg racked up 19 hits, including nine for extra bases — six doubles, one home run and two triples, the second a two-run shot by Maiko Loyola, capping a five-run sixth.
Starting pitcher Matt McSwain improved to 4-1 with the win, scattering five hits and striking out seven Nationals over six innings, and Dustin Molleken gave up three runs on three hits, fanning three over the last three innings, to pick up his first save.
Tonight’s second game in the series is scheduled for 6:35.
