Timothy Peters can now say with certainty that he is racing all the way through Homestead.
The Danville resident and Providence, N.C., native is guaranteed the opportunity to race the entire season of the Camping World Truck Series after primary sponsor Strutmasters.com decided to remain on the hood of Peters’ Premier Racing Toyota.
“Again, it’s definitely a Cinderella story from the way Premier stared last year — going through the holidays not knowing what the future holds for us — and now, here we are with what started as a four-race deal turned into a full season,” Peters said on Thursday.
The initial four-race deal saw Peters finish a career-best sixth at Daytona and then ninth at California Speedway.
After finishes of 15th at Atlanta and 22nd at Martinsville, Peters was ninth in points and the deal was extended for two more races.
Peters has started 21st or better in every race in 2009, and if not for running out of gas at Martinsville and engine trouble and a wreck in the following two weeks, he may have finished in the top 20 in every race.
He is sitting 16th in points, 302 behind leader Ron Hornaday.
“First off, Chip Lofton with Strutmasters is a good guy and he’s a racer,” Peters said.
“It just made sense, I guess. Like I said, I’m very fortunate to have the sponsor that really loves racing and really believes in myself and this team. I guess my cards were dealt right, I should say. Also, the good Lord took care of us as well.”
This weekend could be a good opportunity for Peters to bounce back from his recent troubles.
In two races at Dover International Speedway, he has finished sixth and 14th, both when he was at Bobby Hamilton Racing in 2005 and 2006.
“I’m really confident in coming back here. The reason is my fourth race ever in the Camping World truck was here. We qualified fourth and finish sixth,” Peters said.
“I haven’t seen this place in three years, I guess you could say, and I’m just glad to be back. I’m just glad to be back in the series and a lot of pressure is gone. I can kind of relax now. Everyone is committed and just really looking forward to it.”
