Despite tying Jefferson Forest for the Seminole District regular-season title and beating the Cavaliers in Thursday’s district tournament championship match, E.C. Glass’ volleyball team is seeded second in this week’s Region III tips and must play in today’s first round.
The Hilltoppers (21-2) host Waynesboro tonight at 7 in one of four first-round matches involving area teams, with Rustburg traveling to William Byrd, Liberty visiting Turner Ashby and Staunton River going to Stuarts Draft in the other three.
Jefferson Forest, which received a No. 1 seed and first-round bye in Region III by virtue of a coin toss, will host the winner of Staunton River’s match against Stuarts Draft in a quarterfinal Tuesday at 7 p.m. With wins today, Glass would travel to Spotswood and Liberty would go to Lord Botetourt on Tuesday in other quarterfinals.
The semifinal and championship matches are scheduled for Tuesday and Saturday, respectively, at sites to be determined.
Meanwhile, Dogwood District regular-season champion Altavista hosts one Region B quarterfinal on Tuesday and tournament champion Nelson County visits Randolph-Henry in another, also at 7 p.m.
The Governors overcame a 2-0 deficit to oust second-seeded William Campbell from the Dogwood tournament in Wednesday’s semifinal before sweeping past host Altavista on Thursday.
Three private schools qualified for the Virginia Independent Schools state tournament — Liberty Christian Academy, which will host a Division I quarterfinal on Tuesday, and Holy Cross and Timberlake Christian School, which will travel Tuesday for their Division III first-round matches against teams to be determined.
