Week one of the 2009 high school football season is in the record books, and it featured some outstanding individual efforts.
William Byrd Senior Quarterback Derrick Palmer, senior defensive back/running back, returned the second of the Minutemen's four interceptions on the night 36 yards for a touchdown to spark an incredible comeback against host Broadway. After trailing 20-0 at halftime, Liberty scored 28 unanswered points in the second half, capped by McCoy's 10-yard run, to win 28-20.
DeVaughn Benion, George Washington-Danville junior running back, rushed seven times for 60 yards and three touchdowns in GW's 34-20 upset victory over Durham Hillside (N.C.).
Ben Simmons, Brookville junior tailback, rushed 26 times for 153 yards and a touchdown in the Bees' 27-14 victory over Martinsville.
