The Society of Seven Sports Club selected Liberty Christian Academy senior Grant Jones as the recipient of its fourth annual Titan Trophy award Tuesday night at a banquet attended by more than 100 people at Phase 2, formerly Cattle Annie’s.
In previous years, the Titan Trophy, which honors the senior player voted as the best overall at any position for the upcoming season, was given to three quarterbacks — LCA’s Mike Rocco, who’s now at Virginia, Brookville’s Logan Thomas, now at Virginia Tech, and Peter Rose, now playing with his brothers Jon and Anthony at JMU.
Jones, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound lineman who committed to Liberty University last month, moved into the starting left tackle position on the Bulldogs’ offensive line as a sophomore, replacing Bobby Massie, who’s now playing at Old Miss.
Coaches from 16 area high schools nominated 49 rising seniors for consideration for the Titan Trophy. That list was pared down to 21 players, the “Titan 21,” in May and voting from a panel of 29 society members narrowed the field down to seven who were invited to Tuesday’s banquet.
Finalists included Jones, Brookville lineman Brett Woolard, Staunton River running back Dimitri “Meech” Coles, Gretna quarterback Nick Miller, Amherst linebackers Damien Carter and DeVonte Brown from Amherst and Altavista tight end/linebacker Jerrell Jordan.
The remaining 14 players announced in May were Amherst’s Kirby Anderson and Thomas Sandidge, Brookville’s Ben Simmons and DeShon Foxx, Liberty’s Mike Bowyer and Anthony Reynolds, Virginia Episcopal School’s Daniel Alexander and Colin Ponder, E.C. Glass’ Lydell Hubbard, Gretna’s Darien Jefferson, Heritage’s Theron Perry, LCA’s Ray Jones, Nelson County’s Quinton Murphy and Staunton River’s Cody Jones.
Alexander received the inaugural Bill Dudley Leadership Award, given to a player proven to be an athletic leader of strong character in memory of the Society of Seven Sports Club co-chair who died in February.
