Lynchburg College knocked off Guilford on road in the Hornets’ Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball opener, 7-5, on Saturday as Jeff Taylor Jr. (Heritage) Cameron Grant (Heritage) and Jordan Watkins each drove a pair of runs.
Tayor finished the game with four hits and stole bases and Watkins scored a pair of runs. Mike Walters, Watkins, rock Shiflett and Richard Palase each had two hits for LC (3-2, 1-0). Bryan Breedlove notched the win, working 6 1/3 innings and allowing three runs. Conner Thompson got the save.
Virginia 22, Rhode Island 2
Virginia had 26 hits and every Cavaliers starter had at least one hit by the fourth inning in Virginia’s rout of visiting Rhode Island. Kenny Swab and Keith Werman both had four hits and Steven Proscia, Jarrett Parker and Tyler Cannon all had three hits for the top-ranked Cavaliers (5-1).
Virginia Tech 4, Charleston Southern 2
Jesse Hahn worked seven innings, allowed eight hits and two earned runs to pick up his second win of the season for Virginia Tech (3-2) in the Hokies’ road win. Anthony Sosnoskie drove in a pair of runs and had two hits.
Liberty 6, Lehigh 3
Shortstop Matt Williams had four hits and catcher Jerry Neufang hit a three-run home run, propelling the Liberty past Lehigh in the Hughes Brothers Challenge at Brooks Stadium in Wilmington, N.C. Keegan Linza gave the Flames (5-0) another strong outing as he ran his record to 2-0. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits over seven innings of work.
Softball
Lynchburg sweeps Shenandoah
Lynchburg College swept visiting Shenandoah 5-2 (nine innings) and 8-2 on Saturday. Katie Bruce was the star of the first game. She was the starting pitcher and worked the first for the Hornets’ seven innings from the circle, then she had a two-run single that put LC up 5-2 in bottom of the eighth and returned to the circle to notch the save. Bruce threw eight innings, allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned). She went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Caitlin Dolby earned the win for working a scoreless eighth.
In game two, LC’s Kelly Self hit two-run homer, the first of her career, and Lauren Duguay, Ashley Hohenberger, Taylor Walker and Rachel Gallagher each had an RBI. Melissa O’Hara picked up the win, by working six innings, allowing one unearned run and nine hits for the Hornets (3-1).
Meredith sweeps Randolph
Visiting Meredith College swept Randolph College, taking the first game 5-3 and the second game 12-0 in five innings. Arielle Stout and Jessica Dzeskewicz combined for a five-inning, no-hitter in the second game. Brittany Willingham and Lauren Stevenson both had two hits and Leigh Sexton had two RBIs for the WildCats (2-2).
Men’s lacrosse
Ohio Wesleyan 13, Lynchburg 10
Ohio Wesleyan scored the first four goals of the game, took a 9-4 lead into halftime and held off a visiting Lynchburg College. LC scored six goals in the third quarter to make it interesting and Ethan Farrell’s fourth goal of the match made the score 10-9. But, Wesleyan’s Rob Young scored all three of his team-high goals to close out the game for the Bishops (2-0). Farrell finished with four goals and Dylan Hoff added a goal and four assists for Lynchburg (0-2).
Virginia 13, Stony Brook 8
Chris Bocklet and Steele Stanwick both scored three goals to lead Virginia to victory over visiting Stony Brook. Rhamel Bratton and Chris LaPierre each scored two goals for the Cavaliers (3-0).
Women’s lacrosse
Lynchburg 13, Adrian College 9
Lesley Buckingham and Kathryn Ollice both scored three goals in Lynchburg College’s opener against Adrian. Julie Will and Morgan Logue both added two goals and Christina Tran recorded 16 saves for the Hornets (1-0). Arielle Stout and Jessica Dzeskewicz threw a combined no-hitter in the second game for the Avenging Angels (5-3). Brittany Willingham and Lauren Stevenson both had two hits and Leigh Sexton had a two-run single for the WildCats (2-2).

Colonels to honor state champions
Altavista High will hold a ring ceremony for it’s Group A, Division 1, state championship football team today at 3 p.m. in the school’s gym after a varsity letter presentation at 2 p.m. The Colonels beat J.I. Burton for their first state crown in football Dec. 12 at Salem Stadium, after accomplishing the feat in softball in the spring and girls and boys basketball in 2004.
