Proving it’s one of two epicenters for high school indoor track in the state, Liberty’s Tolsma Center was the scene Saturday of the third- and fourth-fastest 1,600-meter times in the nation during the asics/LU Flames Invitational.
For Heritage High School’s boys and girls 4x200 relay teams, the meet was a statement maker. The Pioneers girls team won the event with a time of 1:50.35 and the Pioneer boys finished a close second with a 1:35.86.
Several other local athletes turned in impressive performances at the meet, which had about 1,800 participants. E.C. Glass’ Aaron Little leaped 44 feet, 3 3/4 inches in the triple jump for a second-place finish. Jefferson Forest’s Josh Drablos won the pole vault at 14 feet, 6 inches to take first place. JF’s Leigha Schimmoeller’s powerful kick propelled her to a state-qualifying time of 5:25 in the 1,600 and Curtis Whitlow finished fourth in the 500 with a time of 1:09.
Anthony Noegel, formerly from Brookville and now at Blacksburg, posted a 4:34 in the 1,600. Liberty Christian Academy’s Dana Mercer won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9 3/4 inches.
The meet’s most impressive performances were by Kathleen and Joanna Stevens of Blacksburg on Friday night. The twins clocked the nation’s third- and fourth-fastest times in the 1,600m with Kathleen running a 4:53.16 and Joanna a 4:53.38. Joanna went on to win the meet’s 1,000 and 3,200 races on Saturday.
