BLACKSBURG — St. John’s rumored interest in Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg is of little concern to the Hokies players.
That’s because Greenberg has told them he’s coming back next season.
Tech star guard Malcolm Delaney told reporters Saturday that Greenberg told him and his father, Vincent, earlier this week that he’s not going anywhere.
“If a coach tells a player that he’s going to be here and tells your parents he’s going to be here and he doesn’t (stay), then I’ll have some different things to say, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be back here,” Delaney said.
According to a report last week by the New York Post, Greenberg, a New York native, is one of the leading candidates for the vacant coaching job at St. John’s, and the right candidate could earn upwards of $1.5 million a year.
Greenberg made $950,000 this year but is scheduled to renegotiate the terms of his six-year deal, which has four years left on it, and talk about a potential extension in the near future.
It’s not known whether Greenberg has actually been contacted by St. John’s.
The only public comments the coach has made about the speculation came after the Hokies lost to Miami in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals last Friday. When asked if he had been contacted about the St. John’s job, Greenberg simply said, “I’m the coach at Virginia Tech.”
But while Greenberg has been tight-lipped, Delaney was pretty open about his opinion of the whole situation.
“If somebody offered you a lot of money and you needed it, then some people would take it, but if you gave your word to your players and parents and you’re loyal to your program, then that gives us nothing to worry about,” Delaney said. “We’re not even thinking about that type of stuff right now.”
The Hokies host Connecticut on Monday night at 7 p.m. in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.
Tech’s players have made it known how important getting to Madison Square Garden and winning the NIT championship would be for the future of the program.
The Hokies want to use this postseason as a springboard to bigger things next season.
Question is: Will Greenberg be around to lead the way?
“No matter who it is (coaching us) … like I said, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be coach (Greenberg), but no matter who it is, we’re going to have a great team, and we’re going to be able to put that together,” Delaney said.
