When Virginia and Virginia Tech met on the basketball court last January, things got feisty. In Tech’s overtime victory at John Paul Jones Arena, the Hokies’ Jeff Allen was ejected from the game for an elbow on Jeff Jones that left the former UVa guard with a welt near his forehead.
As it turns out, the rivals won’t have to wait long to renew acquaintances — they’ll be opening their ACC seasons against one another on Dec. 5 at Cassell Coliseum.
The game highlights Virginia’s 2010-11 schedule, which was released by the school on Thursday. Tech defeated UVa in both regular-season meetings last season.
Virginia’s other notable conference games include home dates with North Carolina (Jan. 8), Duke (Feb. 16) and Virginia Tech (Feb. 19); and visits to Duke (Jan. 15), Wake Forest (Jan. 29) and Maryland (March 5).
The non-conference schedule is highlighted by participation in the Maui Invitational the week of Thanksgiving. The eight-team field includes Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Washington.
UVa will take on Washington, a likely preseason top-25 team, on Monday, Nov. 22. The game will tip off at midnight (eastern time) and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
The winners and losers play the Kentucky-Oklahoma winners and losers the next day.
The finals of the tournament, which will take place at the Lahaina Civic Center, is on Wednesday. The other schools in the field are Wichita State and host Chaminade University of Honolulu.
The Invitational will mark the middle of a tough stretch for Virginia. On its way to Maui, UVa will stop in California and play Stanford — a rematch of last year’s game in the Cancun Challenge that was won by the Cardinal.
Right after Maui, Virginia heads to Minnesota as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Virginia opens its season at home against William & Mary on Nov. 12.
Other non-conference home games include dates with Oregon (Dec. 17), Seattle (Dec.22), Iowa State (Dec. 30) and LSU (Jan. 2). Rounding out the slate are USC Upstate, Radford, Norfolk State and Howard.
