The Lynchburg Hillcats evened their three-game series at Carolina League Northern Division-leading Frederick with a 7-1 victory, Wednesday night at Harry Grove Stadium, but still trail the Keys by 11 games in the second-half standings.
Joey Terdoslavich and Phil Gosselin again sparked the offense for Lynchburg (14-24), combining for five RBI and two runs scored to provided more than enough support for starter Chris Masters (7-5), who allowed just one run on four hits through six innings pitched.
Todd Cunningham doubled to lead off the game and eventually scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Gosselin before Terdoslavich extended his six-game hitting streak in the fourth inning by blasting his 15th home run, a two-run shot to left.
Meanwhile, Masters held the Keys (25-13) scoreless through the first five innings on just two hits. Then in the sixth, Manny Machado led off with a single and advanced to third on the play after Barrett Kleinknecht’s errant pickoff bounced into the first-base dugout before scoring Frederick’s lone run on a sacrifice fly to left.
The Hillcats added two more runs in the eighth on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Gosselin and Terdoslavich, scoring Cunningham and Andrelton Simmons.
In the ninth, L.V. Ware doubled home Christian Bethancourt and Keenan Wiley for the final score before southpaw Ryan Buchter pitched a scoreless ninth.
Nick Haughian (8-5) suffered the loss after yielding five runs, three earned, on seven hits over seven-plus innings.
Gary Moran (0-0) will make his debut pitching start for the HIllcats tonight at 7 against fellow right-hander Jacob Pettit for the Keys.
