Lynchburg starter Gary Moran allowed just one hit over eight innings and the Hillcats offense erupted for nine runs in a 9-0 win over Kinston on Tuesday at City Stadium.
In just his second game with the Hillcats, Moran had a no-hitter heading into the seventh inning. A two-out single by the K-Tribe’s Jeremie Tice bounced off the glove of Andrelton Simmons at short to break up the no-hitter. Moran, who got his first win as a Hillcat after being called up from Low-A Rome last week, struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
With Moran was taking care of the K-Tribe at the plate, Lynchburg’s offense went on a tear. The Hillcats scored three in the first inning and two in the second.
Joey Terdoslavich’s RBI double in the first broke the Lynchburg record for doubles in a season. His 46 doubles tops the previous record of 45 set by Scott Cooper in 1988.
Phil Gosselin’s two-run homer highlighted the second inning.
Gosselin picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the fourth. With runners on the corners and one out, Gosselin hit a slow grounder to first. Jesus Aguilar made the play at first, but L.V. Ware came in to score, giving the Hillcats a 6-0 lead.
Ware put the exclamation point on the win with a three-run homer in the fifth.
T.J. House took the loss for the Indians. House (6-10) pitched five innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits, and walking six batters.
The Hillcats wrap up their six-game homestand tonight against the K-Tribe. Righty David Hale (3-4) will pitch for the Hillcats and he’ll face Indians lefty Mike Rayl (0-1). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
