Andrelton Simmons finished a double shy of the cycle, and his two-out home run in the top of the seventh inning proved critical in the Hillcats’ 4-3 victory in Winston-Salem Wednesday night.
The homer was the first of the season for Simmons, who also singled and tripled. Hillcats first baseman Joey Terdoslavich hit his 48th double of the season, moving him within three of tying the Carolina League record of 51.
Dimasther Delgado pitched six strong innings for Lynchburg and improved to 9-6. He allowed four hits and one earned run and struck out six while walking none.
Lynchburg took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Simmons hit a one-out triple and scored on Marcus Lemon’s squeeze bunt to put the Hillcats up 2-1. They pushed the lead to 4-1 in the eighth, thanks to Simmons’ home run and Geraldo Rodriguez’s RBI single.
But the Dash rallied against Hillcats pitchers Robert Roth and Ryan Buchter. Roth allowed a single and a hit in the eighth before retiring Andy Wilkins. Buchter came in and gave up RBI singles to Ian Gac and Nick Ciolli as the Dash cut the lead to 4-3, but he retired Michael Blanke to end the threat.
Buchter allowed a two-out single to Tyler Saladino in the ninth, but he struck out Jared Mitchell to record his 13th save.
The Hillcats pulled within five games of Potomac for the second playoff spot in the Carolina League North. Potomac lost 2-1 to Kinston Wednesday.
