The Hillcats ran their win streak to three games with a 3-2 victory in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday night, but they gained no ground on Potomac in the race for the second playoff spot in the Carolina League’s Northern Division.
Potomac routed Wilmington 11-3 in Woodbridge and remained five games ahead of Lynchburg. The teams meet in a four-game series at City Stadium next week.
The Hillcats jumped to a 3-0 lead Wednesday night and held off a late Pelicans rally.
Keenan Wiley doubled to lead off the first and scored on Todd Cunningham’s groundout. In the second, the Hillcats made the Pelicans pay for two-out walks to Marcus Lemon and Geraldo Rodriguez. L.V Ware singled to scored Lemon and put the Hillcats ahead 2-0.
They went up 3-0 in the fifth on Christian Bethancourt’s one-out, bases-loaded single. Joey Terdoslavich tried to score from second on the play but was thrown out at home plate. Lemon singled to load the bases again, but Rodriguez struck out as Myrtle Beach escaped the jam.
The Pelicans got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on Ryan Strausborger’s RBI double. Jared Prince hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to draw Myrtle Beach with 3-2.
Eliecer Cardenas got some help from his defense in the eighth, as he forced Zach Zaneski to hit into a double play, the fourth double play of the night for Lynchburg. Cardenas then retired the next four batters in order to record his sixth save.
The teams wrap up the three-game set tonight in Myrtle Beach. The Hillcats then head to Kinston for a three-game set.
