A 3-pointer by Liberty Christian Academy guard Josh Barrick with 1.8 seconds remaining in the regulation sent Tuesday’s game into overtime and spurred the Bulldogs on to a 60-55 victory and into the winners’ bracket of the Danville Register & Bee Holiday Shootout.
Magna Vista guard Gervelle Kidd hit a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass that would have won the game in regulation, but he was ruled to have stepped out of bounds before the shot.
LCA (4-3) went into halftime trailing the Warriors 28-23 before using its defense to make a second-half comeback, according to coach Jeff Platt.
"We played much better defense in the second half," Platt said. "Our focus on defense in the second half allowed us to come back … and helped us get over the hump."
The Bulldogs trailed 38-34 at the end of the third quarter before rallying to send the game into overtime tied at 53.
In overtime, BJ Farrow and Barrick combined to score all seven of the Bulldogs’ points.
Farrow also paced LCA in scoring with 24 points on 9 of 15 shooting. Barrick added 12 points, on four 3-pointers.
The Warriors (3-4) were led by Gervelle Kidd with 24 points on 9 of 18 shooting. They also got contributions in the post from Latrell Wells (10 points) and Nick Moyer (9 points).
Magna Vista coach Kevin Johnson was satisfied with his offense, but noted that his team’s defense still has plenty of room for improvement.
"I was proud of our overall offensive execution, but on defense we need to work some things out," Johnson said. "Our jump switches weren’t good tonight and we missed some box-out assignments."
LCA will play Dan River in today’s winners’ bracket and Magna Vista will face Tunstall in the losers’ bracket.
