Indians sign Cavs pitcher

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Virginia pitcher Will Roberts has signed with the Cleveland Indians, leaving No. 2 overall pick Danny Hultzen as the final remaining Cavalier to sign a Major League Baseball contract.

Roberts will pass up his senior season of eligibility, but the Maggie Walker Governor's School graduate has completed his U.Va. course work and received his degree.

Also signing last week was junior Steven Proscia, who will begin his pro career with the high Class A High Desert (Calif.) Mavericks, an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

While Roberts and Proscia have yet to play, the team's other drafted junior, catcher John Hicks, has been playing for the Clinton (Iowa) LumberKings, a Class A Mariners' affiliate. He has gone 2-for-6 with an RBI in two games.

Hultzen has until August 15 to sign or he will return to U.Va. for a senior season. Most top picks don't sign their professional contracts until hours or minutes before the deadline.

On the other end of the spectrum is David Coleman (Trinity Episcopal), who was not drafted but will play pro baseball this summer.

The senior signed with the Lake County (Ill.) Fielders, an independent team, and went 2-for-3 in his debut Tuesday night.

Four Wahoos seniors were drafted, including Kenny Swab, who has gone 2-for-12 in four games with the Burlington (Kan.) Royals.

Cody Winiarski has made three pitching appearances in the White Sox organization with the Great Falls (Mont.) Voyagers, allowing no hits and one run in three innings.

The player with the most experience is John Barr, who plays on the same team as Roberts, the Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Scrappers. He's hitting .189 in 10 games. Roberts has yet to make a pitching appearance.

Also signed is pitcher Tyler Wilson, who has yet to make an appearance for the Orioles organization.
