RUSTBURG — Matt Kimble got a fingertip on a potentially game-winning 3-pointer from the top of the key by Northside guard Parker Linden and Rustburg’s boys basketball team held off a second-half surge by the visiting Vikings for a 53-51 Region III, Division 3, quarterfinal victory on Tuesday night.

Amherst surges past Rustburg in OT for Seminole boys tourney title

Amherst senior Jeremy Darby didn’t hesitate in going up for the jump ball to start the overtime period in Friday night’s Seminole District boys championship game, played before a packed Heritage High Fieldhouse crowd. The 6-foot-4 forward outleaped Rustburg’s 6-8 senior Marshall Wood and flicked the tip to Lancers point guard A.J. Richerson, who took it in for a breakaway score despite being fouled, completing the three-point play. That set the tone for the final four minutes as Amherst, which overcame deficits of 10-0 in the first quarter and 27-15 at the half, pulled away for a 65-56 triumph.

  • Glass boys, girls favored to defend Region IIII indoor track and field titles

E.C. Glass’ boys and girls indoor track and field teams want to avoid the trap of looking past today’s Region III meet to next Saturday’s Group AA state championships to be held at the same site — Liberty University’s Tolsma Indoor Track Center. The Hilltoppers, coming off a decisive Seminole District boys-girls sweep at rival Heritage, have their sights fully focused on defending their regional crowns.

  • Bees wrestler

Bees seek to wrestle Group AA state title from Christiansburg

Rarely has Brookville carried a more experienced group of wrestlers to the Group AA state tournament, set for today and Saturday at the Salem Civic Center. "I can’t remember having a team like this," coach Don Shuler said, noting this is the first year his team has won back-to-back Region III titles since claiming consecutive crowns from 1990 to 1992. "There’s just a lot of good kids and bringing back all six [2011 state] placers and three finalists, that’s a good thing."

  • Brookville girls spurt past Rustburg with 11-0 run to start second half

BEDFORD — It happened so quickly, Rustburg’s girls basketball team didn’t know what hit it. Brookville, the Seminole District regular-season champion for the seventh time in eight seasons, used an 11-0 scoring run to start the third quarter. The spurt erased a first-half deficit and gave the Bees a 32-24 lead en route to a 60-49 win over the Red Devils in the district tournament’s Division 3 final Wednesday at Liberty.

  • Rustburg relies on Wood, battles past Bees in Division 3 boys clash

BEDFORD — Taking Rustburg senior Marshall Wood out of his game is a tricky proposition. The Virginia Tech recruit showcased his broad skill set in Wednesday night’s Seminole District Division 3 final at Liberty, scoring in just about every way imaginable in a 54-42 victory over Brookville.

  • Generals pull rank in post against Appomattox in Dogwood semis

NARUNA — Basketball and football teammates, William Campbell’s Maxie Crews, Ozell Yuille and Damiun Lockett have learned the value of selflessness in competition. In the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s 52-44 win over Appomattox in the Dogwood District tournament Division 1 final, Crews, who shifted from wide receiver to quarterback in football this past fall, trading places with Lockett midseason, didn’t hesitate to give the ball up rather than go for a contested jam on transition.

Bishops' boys fend off Bulldogs in VIC rematch

Playing before a near-packed house for its Winterfest weekend, Liberty Christian Academy’s boys basketball team kept within striking distance for most of Friday night’s game against cross-town Virginia Independent Conference rival Virginia Episcopal School before falling, 52-44. The Bulldogs (10-12, 0-5 VIC) seized a 26-23 lead at the start of the second half on 3-pointers by Josh Barrick and Zach Clinton before allowing the Bishops (14-3, 4-2) to close the third quarter on a 13-2 run.

Postseason basketball action tips off today in the Dogwood District and on Monday in the Seminole with full slates of first-round games on tap.

  • Martin sideline

Martin, Bradley return to Lynchburg roots at Glass, Heritage

One was a four-year starter on the offensive line at Liberty University; the other played and later coached under Rich Rodriguez at Glenville State College, where he studied the spread attack. For both Ben Martin and Brad Bradley, who were approved as the head football coaches at E.C. Glass and Heritage, respectively, on Tuesday night, there was a sense of coming home when they introduced themselves to their new schools this week.

  • LCA posts

Triple towers of Arias, Penick, Womack keeping Bulldogs atop BRC

Since sophomore guard Morgan Pannell fractured the fifth metatarsal in her foot last month, Liberty Christian Academy girls basketball coach Tom Brown has had to rework his lineup as he did in the preseason, when last year’s starting point guard, Raven Jefferson, transferred to Oak Hill Academy. Fortunately, he’s found a combination that has worked, putting three of his four post players on the floor at the same time — Alana Arias and Gena Penick, who are averaging right around 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots apiece, and Skyler Womack.

  • Heritage dunks on Glass

Pioneers rally behind home crowd to beat city rival Hilltoppers

Of all the stats recorded in Tuesday night’s Seminole District boys basketball clash between cross-town rivals E.C. Glass and Heritage, one stood out for Hilltoppers coach Roy Roberson and another for Pioneers coach Dan Stephens. "We gave up 17 offensive rebounds tonight, which is really the only stat that matters," Roberson said after the Pioneers’ 70-62 victory before a packed Heritage Field House crowd, avenging an early-season loss at Glass. "That’s the absolute reason that we lost the game."

  • Local teams fare well in Region III swim meet

At Saturday’s Region III swimming championships hosted by JMU, the boys 200-yard medley and 200-free relays were excellent indicators of how the team competition would pan out.

  • Seminole teams try to break Bees grip on wrestling title

The odds are against any team ending Brookville’s 42-year stranglehold on the Seminole District wrestling tournament title today starting at 10 a.m. on the Bees’ home mats. But that’s not going to stop the other six schools, particularly Jefferson Forest and Amherst, from trying.

  • JF's Williams

Different strokes: Williams' versatility gives JF edge

Jefferson Forest has had more than its share of exceptional swimmers come through its program over the past decade, but few have been as versatile, or more valuable than senior Caleb Williams, the Seminole District boys swimmer of the year.

Two of the players who made Jefferson Forest’s first-ever Group AA state championship run possible last spring, attacking midfielder Tyler Bullock and goalkeeper Jeremy Lee, committed to continue their soccer careers at Liberty University next fall at a ceremony held at JF on Wednesday, National Signing Day.
