The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team picked up a big commitment from UNC Wilmington transfer guard Adam Smith on Wednesday, according to multiple media outlets.
Former Virginia Tech running back David Wilson signed with the New York Giants on Friday, just in time for the start of rookie minicamp. Wilson, a Danville native, agreed to terms on a four-year deal with an option for a fifth year, according to ProFootballTalk.com. The financial terms of the contract were unavailable, but Wilson, who was taken with the last pick in the first round, is slotted to receive a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $3.3 million, according to ESPN.com.

Rustburg forward Marshall Wood met with new Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach James Johnson on Wednesday and re-affirmed his commitment to the Hokies, Red Devils coach Brantley Shields said. Wood, who signed with Tech in the fall, asked out of his letter of intent last week, and was granted his release to explore his options. But Johnson, who was Wood’s lead recruiter, talked him back into his commitment to the program.

The Carolina Mudcats led the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning Monday at City Stadium when the game was suspended because of fog.
Virginia Tech director of athletics Jim Weaver said last week he was displeased with all of the school’s men’s basketball assistants leaving en masse this offseason for comparable jobs at similar or smaller universities. It was one of the main reasons the Hokies decided to part ways with head coach Seth Greenberg after nine mostly-successful seasons.
James Johnson, who served as an assistant with the Hokies for five years before taking an assistant job at Clemson last month, was hired as Tech’s new head, media reports said.

BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech’s spring game was cancelled Saturday because of thunderstorms, but the day wasn’t a total washout for the Hokies. They received at least six commitments from in-state recruits, including Liberty Christian Academy offensive lineman Braxton Pfaff.
BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech redshirt freshman wide receiver Demitri Knowles had an ice pack wrapped around his right arm after spring practice Thursday to relieve the soreness from another physically taxing scrimmage against the Hokies’ hard-hitting defense. Knowles has taken a beating recently in spring practice — he attributes his bruised right arm to three crunching hits from cornerback Antone Exum in the last two scrimmages — but it’s all for good reason. He’s moving up the depth chart and has a realistic shot at being a major contributor for the Hokies this fall as a receiver and kick returner.
BLACKSBURG — Zack McCray wasn’t crazy about the idea of playing defensive tackle when Virginia Tech’s coaches first broached the subject this offseason. McCray, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound sophomore from Lynchburg, is a defensive end at heart. He feels that will always be the case, but he softened his opinion about splitting time at end and tackle this spring practice when he heard why the Hokies want him to do it.
In his first stint with the Lynchburg Hillcats at the start of last season, left fielder Robby Hefflinger batted .114 in 12 games before being sent down to Single A Rome. Hefflinger hit an impressive opposite-field solo home run over the right-center field wall in the second inning of the Hillcats’ 7-2 victory over the Potomac Nationals at City Stadium on Saturday. In two games this season, Hefflinger is batting .429 with two home runs and three RBIs.

But the close quarters of the half-mile oval and a risky move by Clint Bowyer in extra laps stifled the team’s chances and paved the way for Ryan Newman’s first career victory at the historic short track in the Goody’s Fast Relief 500.
