Gotta love spring! Let’s press the rewind button. Last week, we were quite cool with temperatures only in the 40s and 50s. And the mountains even had a few small bouts of snow showers.
This week, we were very warm with temperatures well into the 80s on Monday. Then a cold front moved through and lowered our temperatures into the 50s and 60s. Some folks had storms move through their backyards.
Is this normal? You bet it is. Very often meteorologists talk about a “roller coaster ride” during this time of year. That’s because this weather can vary widely from week to week, even day to day. During springtime, if you do not like the current weather, just be patient, chances are it will improve soon.
Why does spring have more severe weather than any other season? In order to get big-time thunderstorms, you need to have two different airmasses meeting or colliding. And from April through May, cold, dry air from Canada converges with warm, moist air from the Gulf. This generally happens in the middle part of the country, in Tornado Alley (Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, etc).
As these storms gather, they move to the east and sometimes we are directly in their path, as happened earlier this week. Thankfully though, the worst weather stayed just to our west.
